Join us Wednesday, July 24 at the Tacoma Defiance Soccer Match. Tickets are $20 and include a meal. This is a fundraising event for the church and we would love to get as many people to come as possible! Ticket orders are due by July 21st.
This Sunday we will have a guest preacher, the Rev. Susan Kirlin-Hackett. We will also be lifting up our "celebrations" this Sunday.

NEWSLETTER COLUMN. What's Drag Got to do with Church? A little history first: Drag is not a new phenomenon. Before women were allowed in the theater, men have been dressing up as women for centuries. At its roots, drag is about a performance of gender. There are transgender people who perform in drag but drag queens and kings are not the same as being trans. Many people in the transgender community found drag as a way to live into their true gender but one does not create the other. In the 80s drag houses formed that gave many queer folks a family and home. Drag literally saved people from being homeless, abandoned, and gave them community. Drag performance is about heightening stereotypes on gender and empowering minorities. Drag is meant to be an exaggeration in not just dress but in the performance itself. Many drag performers push boundaries of what is acceptable, normal, and relevant. In a lot of ways drag holds up a mirror to society and forces it to reflect on things like gender roles, gender expression, sexuality, and inclusion. So why bring drag into the church? Besides being great entertainment drag symbolizes the diversity of God's creation. As a church that claims to be opening and affirming we must continually evaluate the boundaries of that welcome and ask ourselves if we are creating space for historically underrepresented groups. We cannot stop at welcoming but must actively find ways to affirm and uplift minority voices. This requires us to step outside of our comfort zone and step down from places of power to empower the richness of God's creation. Drag reminds us that the church is not a monolithic, homogenous institution but a rich, multifaceted spectrum of living, breathing human beings. Drag reminds us of the importance of expression. It pushes us to expand our ideas of how we express our faith in our identity. It speaks to the power of creativity that the Holy Spirit inspires in us. We are called to be co-creators with Christ and in embodying this we seek to creatively bear witness to God's transforming power in our worship. Drag reminds us that worship is not just about what we do but who we are. Drag draws us out of the rigid standards of what is deemed possible and inspires us to create the impossible; just as our faith reminds us that all things are possible with God. Drag is about community. The church has been an agent of hurt and trauma for the LGBTQIA community and continues to be. More then ever we need to make a bold statement that all are welcome here. In that statement we must acknowledge how we historically and presently have been complicit in the church's harm to the LGBT community. It isn't enough to be ONA. There are still so many people who are lost, without community, and don't realize there are churches that accept and celebrate them. If we do not do the work to heal and evangelize this message of inclusion we cannot expect things to change in our neighborhood and world. Practically speaking, for our Drag Gospel Service on July 7th you are invited to come in your everyday clothes or in whatever expression you feel comfortable. There will be some accessories you can pick up on the way to worship (hats, boas, jewelry, etc). We will be having a typical service with communion and some lively music. You are also invited to sign up and bring food for our potluck brunch. We will be playing Bingo during brunch (and there will be prizes). You are also also invited to INVITE SOMEONE!
